Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Claims First Championship in Nearly 30 Months
19 of Medvedev's 21 championships have been won on hard courts
A resurgent Medvedev claimed his first trophy for nearly 30 months with victory over opponent Moutet in the competition championship match.
The athlete, a ex- world number one, has had a challenging year, achieving just one win at the Grand Slams and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.
Medvedev's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serve in specific - caused him dropping out of the elite rankings and ultimately separating with long-time trainer Cervara.
Presently working with his coach and Goetzke, he has consistently advanced in the past month - climaxing in a tightly fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over challenger Moutet.
This marks the player's initial championship following the Rome competition and first on a hardcourt after March of that year.
Success also means he has secured 21 titles at twenty-one distinct competitions.
"For the first time I have attended a competition with my two daughters simultaneously, so to get a championship is particularly special," commented ranked player the champion.
"This title is in tribute of my second daughter her name, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."
Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had failed in his last six finals, including in that event previously this season.
Medvedev's retrieving strategy and frequent emotional displays on the playing surface had led commentators to doubt if his capacity to play at the elite level was over.
But the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, attempting to advance forward and play assertively, backed up by an better serving game.
He came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging opponent, taking 4 of the last five exchanges to gain the advantage.
The competitors traded service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his initial ATP Tour victory, seized the initiative to push for a third set.
The opponent saved four early-game opportunities in a close third set before Medvedev secured a break to that score to serve for the match.
Appropriately, Medvedev clinched the win with a shot at the net, with the Frenchman unable to control a shot after over two and a half hours.
