This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their characters, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.
The couple grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform now.
